This online discussion (from September 2024) featured a panel of experts to discuss the application of AI/ML technologies in Product Development and Simulation. The panel fielded questions from a “live” (online) audience and discuss practical aspects such as its importance and relevance, its level of maturity and robustness, teasing out hype from reality, and describing at a high level what it takes for teams of engineers to adopt it as a powerful tool for real-world product development.

This session addressed questions such as:

  • Is this ready for Prime Time?
  • What’s hype and what’s real?
  • Do I need a PhD in AI/ML to use this tool?
  • Can I trust the results from the AI?
  • How can I verify these results?
  • What are the pitfalls I should be aware of?
  • Can I use the Rev-Sim AI/ML community to learn more about this technology?
  • What software resources are available?

This panel session is part of the free-to-access AI/ML in Simulation learning program at the Revolution in Simulation community site. Please join this free online community to learn more about cutting edge simulation applications and technologies, including the use of AI/ML.

Presented in cooperation with our AI/ML Learning Program Founding Partners

The Rev-Sim community has grown quite a bit since its June, 2018 launch. Watch this short video to see what we mean!

Moderator: Malcolm Panthaki, Aras

Malcolm has been at the cutting edge of simulation software development since 1987. At Abaqus Inc. (then HKS), he led the effort to develop Abaqus/CAE. After HKS, Malcolm founded Comet Solutions, Inc. to develop, productize and market software solutions enabling early simulation to transform the product development process by democratizing simulation. Comet Solutions was acquired by Aras Corp. in 2018, and Malcolm joined Aras. In his role as Vice President of Analysis Solutions at Aras Corp., Malcolm drove product vision and strategy for Simulation Data and Process Management, to ensure that simulation becomes a seamless part of the enterprise Digital Thread. As VP of Global Alliances, he now manages strategic OEM partnerships. As a Co-Founder, Malcolm spearheaded the formation in 2018 of the RevolutionInSimulation online community whose goal is to help democratize simulation and to advance the adoption of cutting-edge simulation technologies and tools, including the use of AI and ML.

Panelist: Justin Hodges, Siemens

Justin is the senior AI/ML specialist at Siemens Digital Industries for Simulation and Test products. He sits in a product management role for the company’s portfolio of simulation software. Justin earned a bachelors, masters, and Ph. D in mechanical engineering from the University of Central Florida in Thermos-Fluids. Justin has been advancing his technical AI proficiency since his first professional AI experience in 2017, which led to a patented workflow incorporating CFD flow-field results, based on CT scans, into machine learning models. Incorporating information from clinical surveys, breathing measurements, and CFD results into a machine learning framework provides improved diagnosis of COPD. Since then, Justin joined Siemens full time to apply AI/ML to a wide variety of simulation and test products across many industries (automotive, aerospace, marine, etc.). Justin’s focus has centered on efforts to augment the capabilities of engineering simulation using machine learning. He helps customers solve problems using machine learning, which adds value to their business and delivered products.

Panelist: Mike Sheh, Empower Ops

Mike is the Managing Director of Empower Operations Corp, the company behind the OASIS.AI suite of AI solutions. He brings a diverse background, having worked with companies such as GM, Cray Research, Engineous, and Dassault Systems. Over the past 20 years, his focus has been on data analytics, optimization, process integration, automation, and data management. Since joining EmpowerOps in 2020, he has positioned the company as a leading AI technology partner for engineering software developers. Mike holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.

Panelist: Rob McAveney, Aras

Rob brings a lifelong passion for technology to the CTO role at Aras. For the past 20 years, he has focused that passion on building rich software platforms that solve difficult business problems for major industrial companies. Rob acts as Aras’ technology visionary and provides design oversight for future PLM technology, while remaining grounded in the realities of configuration management, systems integration, and the many other challenges of delivering enterprise software. Prior to Aras, Rob led technical sales engagements for Eigner, an early entrant in the PLM market. He began his career at Boeing, where he gained a broad understanding of engineering and manufacturing systems and processes.

Panelist: Sandeepak Natu, CIMdata

With industry experience of more than 25 years, Sandeepak has a strong background in multi-physics-based modeling and simulation technologies, including the development and application of hybrid digital twins. Sandeepak started his career with Fluent India (now part of ANSYS Inc.) and has been associated with several engineering consultancy and simulation software organizations. He has worked with various industrial organizations helping them adopt simulation technologies and has deep application expertise in the automotive, aerospace, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, consumer products, and healthcare sectors. More recently, he has been involved in multiple technology and management consulting roles, including a key role in helping a global vaccine manufacturer scale up its production facilities at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
